There is a lot to be said for picking up a book, finding a quiet spot and turning a page or two. There are myriad benefits of reading that have advanced the human race over the centuries, but we are not here to get all philosophical on you. By all means, you can go and read about that in a book somewhere.
Here are five key reasons you should put down the phone or tablet, pick up a book and put your feet up for a few minutes.
Boost your relaxation
In today’s fast-paced world, there is a lot to be said for ‘taking some time to smell the pages’. Removing yourself from the madness for even 15 minutes each day and losing yourself in a book is a great way to reset and get ready for whatever the day throws at you.
Learn something new
Whether you are reading a fiction or non-fiction book, you will learn something. Whether it be a different perspective, an experience or a journey. We’ve all heard someone say, “The movie was nowhere near as good as the book”, they were right. A book can tell you more than a movie can ever show you because it draws on your imagination to create the images.
Embrace different ideas and perspectives
Books are packed with different ideas and unique perspectives; revolutions have been inspired by many of the ideas contained within the pages of books throughout the world. Exploring different ideas and perspectives is the way we learn, evolve and bring about change.
Sharpen your focus
Reading a book requires you to block everything else out and concentrate. No phone, no email, no social media…just you and your book. Through reading, you can improve your ability to focus on what you are doing and block out the things that can wait.
Increase your vocabulary
Reading books increases vocabulary, comprehension and how you apply them. Whether you want to improve your vocabulary to impress your buddies or colleagues or to boost your understanding to the next level, increasing your vocab benefits everyone from all walks of life.
A book a day will keep the brain matter from going away, so take five, open a book and lose yourself, even if it’s just for a moment.
