Five morning routines you should be doing now

The struggle can be real if you’re not a morning person. Dragging yourself out of bed, shuffling into the shower, throwing down breakfast only to be confronted with the dreaded daily commute all while you’d rather be chilling out at home curled up in bed.

By changing your morning routine, you’ll get more out of your day, get fit and increase productivity.

Here are our top five morning routines you should be doing.

Get up an hour earlier

Adding a ‘productive hour’ to your day will get you moving and boost your productivity overall. Whether you get up early to get organised for the day, go for a run or head into the office an hour early to get a head start – whatever you do, you’re going to be adding a precious extra hour into your day. Rather than staying up late well into the night, add a productive hour in the morning and you’ll hit the ground running – literally!

Exercise daily

Focusing on a daily exercise routine for 15 or 20 minutes will get your day started in the best possible way. Put together a routine with push ups, sit ups, star jumps – you name it – and watch your energy levels soar. There are apps such as ‘The 7 Minute Workout’ will give you the daily work out you’ve been searching for. Exercise activates not only the body but the mind, kicking everything into gear and giving you a chance to work off a calorie or two.

Drink more water

Water is the ‘elixir of life’, and it’s important you’re getting enough water into your day. Kick off your day off with a 600ml bottle of water either room temperature (which is better for you) or out of the fridge before, during or after your exercise, or simply before you leave the house. Drinking water first thing in the morning will kick your digestive system into gear, hydrate you for the day and set your day in the right direction.

Have a healthy meal, juice or beverage

Just because you are busy is not an excuse to each bad food for breakfast. Many dietitians consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day. Make breakfast a good one filled with low GI foods, fruit and a little dairy to ensure your body is fuelled up and ready to go. If you’d rather opt for a healthy shake that you can sip on the go, consider a shake packed with all the fruits, veggies and supplements you need to power you through the day.

Plan the day ahead

Failure to plan is planning to fail. Rather than getting to work and then thinking about ‘what will I do now’, spend 10 or 15 minutes planning your day, creating a to-do list and making sure you have any important items ticked off. Prior planning prevents poor performance and should be part of everyone’s morning routine.

Get your morning routine motoring with some of the tips outlined above. Before long you’ll have more energy, feel more organised and have heaps more time in your day to spend time on the things you love doing.
