What is the one that most highly successful people have in common? It’s their morning routine. By implementing just one or two of these small changes into your morning, you’ll see progress beyond what you ever imagined.
1. They ditch social media in the morning
I can hear you screaming at your computer/phone/tablet – ditch social media?! No thanks. Rather than waking up and checking Facebook or Instagram first, successful people are more likely to get ready first. If you’ve got a long train/ferry/bus ride, instead of scrolling mindlessly try listening to a podcast. Not only will your eyes thank you, but so will your mind. If you’re after a bit inspiration, try listening to Headspace meditation for 10 minutes each morning.
2. They say affirmations
This may sound like a weird one, but hear us out. You know when you wake up in the morning, glance at your bed-hair and suddenly you’re in a mad rush to get ready for your day ahead? STOP. Just breathe, take a look in the mirror and smile. Develop a daily affirmation to chant to yourself, and start believing it. No matter if it’s “You’ve got this” or “You are looking FINE!”. Whatever your mantra is, own it and believe it.
3. They drink warm lemon water
It’s no secret that highly successful people drink lemon water as soon as they wake up… but what’s the reason? Well, when you drink warm lemon water as soon as you wake up it helps to instantly spike your energy levels, both physically and mentally. It improves nutrient absorption in your stomach, giving you a natural energy buzz that lasts all day. Make sure you wait between 15-30 minutes after consuming the concoction before eating – which is the perfect time for some light exercise! Lemons are full of nutrients, such as potassium, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
4. They get moving
Whether it’s getting up and smashing out a big gym session, going for a run or making your way through a 15 minute yoga class, getting your body moving in the morning is something that everyone needs to be doing. Why? You’re more likely to commit to an exercise routine if you get it done first thing in the morning, as multiple studies have shown. Also, exercise releases good endorphins, which basically can alter your mood. The more ‘feel-good’ endorphins, the better your mood will be for the day. It’s really a win-win situation, plus the benefits of regular exercise will have you in tip top shape and in the right mindset.
5. They make their beds
It only takes a few minutes, but making your bed might be the best thing you can do for yourself each morning. A recent survey showed that 71% of bed makers reported that they were happy with their lives, compared to only 62% of people who didn’t make their bed who said they were happy with their lives. Bed makers were also shown to be more satisfied with their career, happier with where they lived and more likely to exercise. SO what are you waiting for? Get making!
6. They write down things they’re grateful for
Expressing gratitude daily is something we should all be doing, but most of us aren’t. It’s a great way to center yourself and gain perspective before you hit the office or the gym for the day. Take the time to write down 5 things you’re grateful for today – they could be having certain people in your life, the places you’re going or the opportunities that have recently been presented to you. Whatever they are, make sure you make the time to appreciate them. It’s incredibly easy to wake up in a crappy mood, and forget the things that are most important to us.
