It’s official; it’s absolutely freezing at the moment and we just can’t deal with the cold. Koala HQ is full of blankets and beanies right now, and we’re all dreaming of going home, jumping into our Koalas and checking out the latest Netflix series. This July is a rather sad time for Australian Netflix, with an extra tax added to the current pricing, and popular series like “GirlBoss” and “Sense8” being discontinued. Despite these setbacks, we will move on, and there are still a brilliant range of movies and series hitting our shores this July.
Chasing Coral: If you’re even remotely interested in what is happening to our worldly environment, then Chasing Coral is one Netflix movie we couldn’t recommend more highly. It’s about the destruction of coral reefs due to global warming, and documents the mass death of coral reefs that we seldom hear about or see. The doco was purchased by Netflix, who acquired global rights to it after it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s something we should all take the time to watch and educate ourselves on this important topic; as it’s closer to home than most of us realise… the Great Barrier Reef!
Hot Tub Time Machine: Sure, you may lose a few brain cells while you watch this film, but what you lose in intelligence you’ll gain in laughter. Hot Tub Time Machine is designed to make you LAUGH, and follows the story of four pals who are stuck in a life rut. They’ve all got their own problems (from hopeless party animal to video game addict), but they’re given a second chance at life when a night of heavy drinking (in a hot tub of course) transports them back to 1986.
Friends from College: An original comedy series from Netflix (our favourite type of comedy!), Friends from College follows the adventures of a group of friends from Harvard. They’re all staring down the barrel of their forties, and it’s a hilarious storyline that involves former romantic entanglements and loads of #howtoadult moments. With a stellar cast of Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Annie Parisse, Nat Faxon, Fred Savage and Jae Suh Park, we can’t wait to watch this series.
The Princess Diaries: Anne Hathaway meets all our wildest dreams in this absolute classic. If you haven’t watched Princess Diaries, can you really call yourself a millennial? Probably not, and that’s totally acceptable. Do yourself a favour and watch this ASAP. It’s hilarious, a cute love-story and best of all; has a few life lessons that we could all do with… including never ripping off a nose strip fast because it HURTS!
The Worst Witch: All the 90’s babies in the house, RAISE YOUR HANDS and be prepared for ALLLL the memories. The new remake looks seriously epic, with Bella Ramsay (who you may recognise from Game of Thrones) playing the beloved Mildred Hubble. You could call her the opposite of Hermione Granger, struggling to cast even the simplest of spells. Get the gang together, and have a glass of wine (because #adult) and enjoy the remake of your favourite 90s show ever.
The Incredible Jessica James: An absolute diamond in the rough, ‘The Incredible Jessica James’ is currently sitting pretty on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% rating, and we’re slightly obsessed. It focuses around the life of aspiring playwright, Jessica, who’s in New York and just gone through a rough break up. Laugh, cry and feel ALL the emotions with Jess as she navigates the modern world of dating, and strikes an odd connection with a recently divorced man. This is our binge series for the month, so get the popcorn and wine ready for the ultimate gals night in.
