When you think of sleep, you probably just focus on it as a chore. You jump into bed, get some sleep and then get up and get ready for the day. Snoozing is so much more than just a chore, with experts only just starting to understand the impact that sleep can have on our overall health, wellbeing and happiness.
One study that looked at the habits of happy people found that proper sleep was a huge
part of their routine. They also found that their sleeping habits right before bed also played a crucial role in their levels of happiness for the next day.
Here are 4 things you can do before bed to create a happier tomorrow -
1. Read
Reading before bed is a great way to calm your mind and has also been shown to boost
creativity and productivity levels for the day ahead. Michael Kerr, a prominent business
speaker and author knows many successful people who read before bed and swear by
the effects. “This isn’t necessarily reserved just for business reading or inspirational
reading. Many successful people find value in being browsers of information from a
variety of sources, believing it helps fuel greater creativity and passion in their lives,”
stated Kerr. If you want to feel inspired about your life and energised for your day
ahead, aim to read for at least 20 minutes every night and see how it changes your
outlook.
2. Make to do lists
Happiness doesn’t necessarily mean that your life is perfect, but it does mean that you
approach life in a way that is solution based rather than problem based. One of the best
ways to get on top of your life and to limit stress is to stay organised. Many people
report losing sleep because they are tossing and turning about all the things that they
need to do the next day. To avoid this, making a to-do list can help to get all of your
ideas out on paper and give you a clear direction as to what is ahead for tomorrow. As
Kerr states- “Clearing the mind for a good night sleep is critical of a lot of successful
people. Often they will take this time to write down a list of any unattended items to
address the following day, so these thoughts don’t end up invading their head space
during the night.”
3. Spend Time with Family
Creating harmonious relationships at home is only going to improve on your happiness
and motivational levels. Use the evening to turn off your computer and smartphone and
instead spend time bonding with your family. Connecting with your family about their
day and taking a genuine interest in their experiences has also been shown to create
more trusting and supportive relationships, which can do wonders for your overall
feelings of happiness.
4. Reflect on things you are grateful for
The happiest people in life are the people who learn to be grateful for whatever comes
their way. Most of us have so much to be happy for and the more we can acknowledge
this, the happier we are going to feel. Take a moment at the end of each day to reflect
on three or four things that you feel grateful for. This will help you to feel inspired about
the day ahead and grateful for the opportunity of another day.
