centre in your brain.

In a controlled study, researchers found that wearing socks to bed caused blood vessels to dilate, which in turn signalled the brain that it was time to sleep. The researchers also found a correlation between the dilation of the extremities and the speed of falling asleep. When the blood vessels were dilated in the feet, the participants were able to fall asleep much faster.

Aside from helping you achieve a deeper night of sleep, wearing socks to bed has also been shown to help reduce night sweating and hot flushes. This is because wearing socks to bed helps to regulate the body temperature and reduces the chances of getting too hot or having a hot flash.

Keeping your temperature regulated at night is a great way to ensure a sound sleep and
reduces the chances of waking up at night from feeling too hot.

Choosing the Perfect Pair of Socks

When it comes to choosing the perfect pair of socks to wear to bed, the experts warn that hygiene is extremely important.

Do not wear the same socks you have been wearing all day to bed as this will leave your feet and toenails susceptible to developing fungal and other bacterial infections. Instead, choose a pair of cotton or natural fibre socks that are not too thick, as you want the material to be somewhat breathable and loose fitting.

Thick socks that are made of man-made fibres can counteract the health benefits of
sleeping with socks on and can also cause your body to feel too hot at night. Before wearing your socks to bed, ensure your feet are clean by washing them in warm
soapy water. Be sure to get between your toes and under your toenails so your feet are
squeaky clean.

Dry your feet completely before putting your socks on and going to bed. For added benefits, you can even rub some peppermint or lavender oil or lotion into your feet for relaxation purposes.
