The best boredom-busting podcasts

We all love a little distraction in our lives, and it’s little wonder that more and more of us are turning to podcasts to fight boredom and make the most of our commutes. The best thing about podcasts is they’re great for those of us who are multitaskers, who like to do a million things at once. So, next time you’re washing the dishes, are stuck on a bus, or mowing the lawn, chuck on a pair of headphones and listen to one of these podcasts; whether it’s to learn, laugh or live, these podcasts are sure to entertain and delight.

The Minimalists

If you’ve ever looked at your bedroom and sighed at the stupid amount of clothing you have (even though you only wear 5 percent of it), then it might be time to introduce a more minimalistic way of living into your life. The Minimalists – Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus – are two insanely intelligent and very relatable humans dedicated to decluttering and to maximise their lives.

Lady Lovin’

Once you start this podcast, you won’t be able to stop. Listen as three friends chat everything about love, life and other important conversations. Each week Lady Lovin’ invites an interesting guest on, and they’re not afraid to delve into deep issues, as well as the light-hearted. Ladies, this is one podcast you’ll want to add to your list ASAP.

S-Town

One of the most anticipated podcasts of all time, S-Town is an investigative journalism podcast hosted by Brian Reed. Created by the producers of Serial and This American Life, S-Town is seriously addictive. It broke records when it was downloaded more than 10 million times within four days of being released. Beware: once you start listening, you probably won’t stop.

TEDTalks

If you’re in need of a short burst of motivation or inspiration, then you can’t go past TEDTalks. These are intimate, thought-provoking conversations that fall under TED’s “ideas worth spreading” slogan. You’ll learn a whole heap from a variety of different people, and be exposed to concepts and ways of thinking you’d likely never considered. Most are relatively short – perfect for a quick trip across town.

My Dad Wrote a Porno

If we needed to explain this one, we’d be a bit worried. In all seriousness, My Dad Wrote a Porno has got to be one of the funniest podcasts ever recorded. Listen as a man and his two friends read – and critique – adult literature written by his own father (with the nom de plume of Rocky Flintstone)… While the content might not be suitable for younger ears, it’s hilarious, intriguing and sometimes disgusting but is absolutely guaranteed to leave you in stitches!

War on Waste

If you’ve ever been interested what happens to your coffee cup after you’ve finished your morning brew (hint: it isn’t recyclable) or why all bananas look perfect in the supermarket, then War on Waste is a podcast you must listen to. It’ll open your eyes (and ears!) to how we’re pushing more waste into the world than it can handle, and provides super interesting statistics and interviews on how it can – and must – be stopped.

Stuff You Should Know

Back in 2007, Discovery – the company arguably most famous for its documentary TV channels – picked up HowStuffWorks.com for a cool $250m. The company invested heavily in podcasts and one of the best is Stuff You Should Know. Hosts Josh and Chuck are expert researchers and both share a great sense of humour. They cover a broad range of topics and frequently go on interesting tangents, but manage to pack in so much information into their hour-long shows that you come away feeling a little smarter and with a smile on your face.

All these podcasts can be downloaded from a range of different sources and are well worth your time. These are some of our favourites, but there are countless great ones out there, so if you’ve got any other recommendations, please let us know and share the podcast love.
