Netflix & Koala: June

Take a deep breath… we’re into the sixth month of 2017 already. We know, we know. Where on Earth did the last five full months go? If you’re feeling a bit lost, here are a few things you’ve probably missed: Trump is in power, Zoe-Foster Blake & Hamish are bringing another life into the world, Schapelle Corby is back on Aussie soil, and Prince Harry is officially off the market. The good news? You’ve still got another seven full months to indulge in all the Netflix you want. Here’s what we’re looking forward this month at Koala HQ:

Orange is the New Black Season 5: If there was one series on Netflix with a cult following, it’d have to be OITNB. The coveted show is back for another season, and with the loss of a major character in the last episode of season 4, the cliff-hanger ending has the entire Koala office on edge. The teaser trailers have revealed riots, guns and more girl power than we could ever be prepared – but are eternally grateful – for.

GLOW: Based on the 1980’s syndicated women’s professional wrestling league, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, GLOW follows the story of out-of-work actress Ruth Wilder (played by Alison Brie) and her accidental entry into women’s wrestling. As a connection to our previous entry, it’s produced by three alumni from Orange is the New Black, so we’re convinced it will be amazing. While the series promises to be more a comedy than doco-drama, the underlying themes of empowerment and comradeship make for an interesting first season that we’re super curious to watch.

Suicide Squad: Another instalment in the Marvel series, Suicide Squad topped the box office and now you can watch it from the very comfort of your own bed. A team of extremely dangerous supervillains are forced to band together for a top-secret mission and dubbed the “Task Force X”. Watch as the criminals unite to battle a powerful entity, while the Joker (Jared Leto) plans an evil agenda of his own. Starring Margot Robbie and Will Smith, this is one movie you can grab the whole gang together to watch.

Harry Potter 1 – 4: After years of speculation, Netflix has finally has given us access to the first four Harry Potter movies, and we couldn’t be happier. For anyone that’s been living under a rock, that’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). If we were to plan an epic movie night, you’d be hard pressed to beat binging on the first four movies. Make sure you’ve got plenty of snacks, keep up the hydration and have tissues handy!

Okja: Netflix has really nailed its original series and movies, and Okja is one that we LOVE. It follows the journey of young Mija, who lives a lovely, simple life in the mountains of South Korea. The only unusual thing? She is the caretaker and companion to Okja; a massive, friendly animal that she’s grown up with. Her life changes suddenly when Okja is stolen by Mirando Corporation, an American company that claims the helpless animal is the answer to the world’s food problems. Follow Mija’s journey as she sets out to rescue Okja, and runs into all kinds of trouble with capitalists, demonstrators and consumers. This one looks like a real tear jerker and thought starter. We can’t wait.
