Your bedroom is a place of rest, relaxation and love. Just like you wouldn’t mix dinner with dessert halfway through, you shouldn’t mix your bedroom up with anything else. These days, so many of us have warranted our bedrooms as much more than this. The modern bedroom has turned into a hoarders’ paradise, a laundromatte, beauty parlour, cinema and petting zoo. Here are 6 things that shouldn’t be in your room:
Television
We all know the obvious reasons not to have the TV in the bedroom, but not only can it impact your ability to fall asleep faster (do not fall asleep watching TV!), it can be much more sinister. A television that sits in a bedroom creates an urgency to be turned on when you’re in the room, even if it’s just for a comforting background noise. This can create a social distraction from your partner, making an intimate connection or even just a simple conversation near impossible. Keep it simple, the TV belongs in the lounge room.
Pets
Argh we hate this too, but pets in the bedroom just aren’t as good for you as we’d like to think. Not only do (most of them) shed fur, they can cause a running anxiety in the back of your mind; where are they, what are they doing, are they okay? They can also prevent you from going to sleep, and can pass on a range of mites, ticks and fecal matter into bed. We’re not saying DON’T sleep with pets, (we support it!) we’re just saying it’s not conducive to sleep.
Snacks
Ew, do we need to go further into this? We don’t need a scientific study to let us know that bringing food into the bedroom is a big no-no. Not only does it encourage bad habits (eating dinner in bed is never acceptable), it sends out a big neon welcome sign to creepy crawlers. Would you like a cockroach infested room? Us neither, so leave the food to the kitchen and make sure you clean up any random dishes in your room.
Work
Just like you wouldn’t want to bring stress into the bedroom, work should never be allowed to enter the bedroom. Heck, if you’re working 9-5 in an office work shouldn’t enter the home. We know, we know; there are times when you need to bring work home or work the odd weekend. And that’s fine, just don’t do it in the bedroom. Keep it professional at a table in the living room, or the study. Work is most likely going to involve your phone, laptop or some form of blue light, which studies have proven time and time again is extremely detrimental to your sleep. Don’t do it to yourself.
Beauty/Hygiene Items
Controversial, but just as work doesn’t belong in the bedroom, neither do your personal hygiene/beauty products. The bedroom is for two things, and two things only… sleep and intimacy. Makeup, deodorant, face wash etc. can not only clutter your room, but they can also be extremely messy. Don’t risk the accident waiting to happen; transfer your makeup to your bathroom and watch as your room becomes neater.
Clutter and Knicknacks
Don’t fall into the trap of your room becoming a hoarder’s paradise. It’s hard, but resist at all costs. The more mess and unnecessary items in your room, the more anxiety and stress it’ll give you. So many of us buy crappy items we don’t need, and they end up piling into towering mountains of uselessness. If you’re able to relate to this, it might be time for a big clean out. Whether you host a garage sale or go throw a stall at your local markets, it’s time to reorganise your room and make into that sleep sanctuary you’ve always dreamed of.
