Sleep trend: make time to beditate

When was the last time you truly thought about your life and made a conscious effort to be more mindful? For most of us, meditation is a far-off, sometimes unrealistic goal. Taking 30 minutes during the day to focus on nothing but yourself and your life can be asking too much of a lot of people, but thanks to the next sleep trend we can all jump on the bandwagon.

Introducing… BEDITATING!

Forget meditation, we’ve embraced beditation here at Koala HQ. By taking just 5 minutes out of your morning routine, you can change your entire mindset and outlook for the day. The best part? You can do it in the very comfort of your own bed, and because you’re doing it as soon as you wake up, it won’t even feel like a chore.

The concept came from Laurence Shorter and his book The Lazy Guru, where he advocates a return to laziness as a form of relaxation and happiness.

“Just stop,” he counsels. “Lie in bed and let the sounds and sensations of the morning wash over you. No hurry, no goal, no chakra breathing, just relax. There is nothing you have to do.”

Your definitive guide for ‘How to Beditate’:

  1. Set two separate alarms for the morning. One for your usual wake up time, and then another ten minutes later. The time between the two is your designated beditation time.
  2. When you wake up, prop yourself up a little with pillows so you’re less likely to fall asleep again.
  3. Take 3 deep breaths and rest your hands on your stomach. For the first minute, pay attention to your breathing and focus.
  4. The rest of the beditation is up to you. Let your mind wander and think about whatever it wants; whether it’s the day ahead or a new project that you want to work on.
  5. Make sure you don’t fall back asleep, as this ruins the entire point of beditating. Don’t worry if it feels wrong; the entire point of beditating is to be lazy, to relax and think about whatever you want for ten minutes.

Enjoy your beditation and remember that for this to work, you have to give it a genuine go. Commit at least two weeks to your daily beditation and watch as it improves your happiness and mindset.
