Meet Lydia Maskiell; a mum, a stylist and a leading expert when it comes to interior colours. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with Lydia to discuss all things Koala, colour and of course, her gorgeous son Harry.
If you’re looking for a room refresh, take inspiration from the decadent navy and ultramarine hues dispersed throughout Lydia’s sanctuary. “The deep blues, indigos, and navies are hugely on trend at the moment, and when paired with a luxurious material like velvet, really add a sense of sophistication to any space. I’m also really taken with green and maroon velvet currently.”
What’s your go-to tip to refresh your bedroom?
“Cushions! I’m a huge cushion lover, I have a library of amazing cushions that I simply can’t let go of. I’m always in pursuit of the humble cushion and I layer patterns, textures, colours and varying shapes to get that perfect arrangement.”
How do you create different looks for clients?
“We all want different things from a space but sometimes clients find it hard to know what they’re looking for and sometimes need a little help to define their own style. The key is communication to work out what it is about interior spaces that the client is drawn to and what they’re not. From there, we work to define the things that are important to them in terms of functionality, needs and aesthetics so their home is a reflection of their individual personalities.”
What is the inspiration behind your bedroom?
“Life gets hectic and I think it’s important to have a space that you can come home, retreat into and feel a sense of quiet. It’s probably why my wall colour, Dulux Tranquil Retreat got across the line when I was choosing paint colours because it was all about creating this tranquil retreat. It’s calm, it’s flooded with natural light, and the furnishings are soft and luxurious – all attributing to my very own tranquil retreat.”
If you could only choose one investment piece of furniture for the bedroom, what would it be?
“Your bed really is the focal point of any bedroom, so I think getting the foundations right with selecting the right bed is worth the investment. There is a permanence with selecting a bed, whereas the look can be transformed over and over with cushions.”
Why did you choose Koala mattress?
“As the bed is the foundation for the bedroom aesthetic, the mattress is the investment piece for the functionality of the bedroom. I wanted a mattress that was going to fit into my concept of tranquility; it needed to be amazingly comfortable, luxurious and make me melt into my retreat – all things that were highlighted in the Koala mattress reviews. I have not been disappointed, my Koala mattress has definitely lived up to it’s 5-star reviews. The entire process was so simple, so fast and made the unpacking experience actually fun!”
Tell us a little about Harry; does he ever help or inspire you with bedrooms?
“Definitely. I’m much more practical in my approach when designing for families. I tend to be more thoughtful when considering materials, durability and family needs – especially cleaning aspects. In saying that, don’t discount the fact you can have a stylish home in spite of having toddlers. Harry has also had to learn the value and specialness of owning a Malmo stool. As Harry grows, I’m sure he’ll continually shape the way I design and think about things. I believe it can only make me a better designer and ultimately a better person.”
